The California budget problems are not due to a lack of revenues. Over the last 20 years, the California Consumer Price Index has risen 44% and population has increased by 20%. During the same period, state spending as increased by 262%, from about $40 billion to $145 billion. This huge expansion in the size of state government is the root cause of our budget problems. The solution is not to raise taxes so the government can keep growing – it is to rein in spending and limit government growth. I support a constitutional amendment to limit spending increases.
As Ronald Reagan reminded us many times, when you tax something, you get less of it. Higher taxes mean less savings, less productivity, less investment into the marketplace and fewer jobs. Taxes in California are already too high and hurt our competitiveness with other states. I oppose any increase in taxes.
Illegal immigration is a huge drain on our state budget. Over $10 Billion annually is spent on services and costs associated with illegal immigration in California. Taxpayers cannot afford, and should not be asked, to subsidize people who have not legal right to be in our country.
Congestion on our streets and highways is a major problem that impacts our quality of life. Being stuck in traffic means less time with our families.
The state’s infrastructure is in serious need of repair and expansion. As Vice-Chairman of the Orange County Transportation Authority, I am working to make sure our transportation dollars are spent on projects that relieve congestion and make life easier on everyone in Orange County. In the Assembly, transportation will be one of my top priorities.
I am pro-life. While the U.S. Supreme Court has made abortion legal, there are numerous measures that state legislatures can and should adopt, such as parental consent for minors and restrictions on late-term abortions.
I support adoption of a state constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and woman.
